Biography
Antony Donaldson was born on 2 September 1939 in Godalming, Surrey, England. He studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art before attending the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art from 1958 to 1962, where he received a postgraduate scholarship in fine art.
During the early 1960s Donaldson emerged as part of the vibrant London art scene that gave rise to British Pop Art. Through friendships with artists such as Allen Jones and Peter Phillips, he became associated with a generation of artists exploring new forms of figurative painting influenced by mass media, consumer culture, and modern technology.
Donaldson’s paintings are characterized by bold colors, strong graphic forms, and imagery drawn from contemporary life. Racing cars, popular personalities, and iconic objects frequently appear in his compositions, creating a dynamic interplay between abstraction and recognizable subject matter. His work reflects the visual energy of the 1960s while maintaining a distinctive painterly approach.
In 1966 Donaldson received a Harkness Fellowship that allowed him to live and work in Los Angeles, where he interacted with American artists and absorbed new influences from the emerging West Coast art scene. After returning to London in 1968, he continued to develop his artistic practice, later expanding into sculpture and large-scale public commissions.
Over the course of his career Donaldson has exhibited widely in Europe, the United States, and Asia. His works are included in the collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, and the British Museum, among many others.
Today Antony Donaldson lives and works between London and southwest France, and his work continues to be recognized as an important contribution to the development of British Pop Art and contemporary figurative painting.
